Takashi becomes Japan's first female prime minister
TOKYO, Oct 21 (Iraq Times) – Hardline conservative Sanae Takaichi was elected on Tuesday as Japan’s first female prime minister after winning a decisive vote in the lower house.
Her victory broke a psychological barrier in a country where men remain overwhelmingly dominant and put Japan, a close ally of the United States, on a path toward a strong rightward shift on issues such as immigration and social issues.
Takaichi, an aide to the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and an admirer of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, received 237 votes in the lower house’s ballot to choose the next prime minister, exceeding the majority of the 465-seat chamber.
