The Security Council fails to adopt a draft resolution to extend the lifting of UN sanctions on Iran.
The UN Security Council failed on Friday to adopt a draft resolution to extend the lifting of UN sanctions on Iran.
The Security Council session comes as European countries attempt to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran under the recently reactivated snapback mechanism.
Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia confirmed on Friday that the signatories to the Iranian nuclear agreement do not have the right to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran.
Nebenzia said during a Security Council session that "the signatories to the Iranian nuclear agreement do not have the right to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran."
He added that "the European Troika's move to reimpose sanctions on Iran has no legal basis."
He emphasized that "the Europeans reject diplomacy regarding the Iranian nuclear program."
