The Erbil Governorate administration announced on Monday its intention to implement a local project aimed at documenting and restoring the city's heritage neighborhoods, buildings, and ancient mosques, in cooperation with specialized companies.
The governorate's media office stated in a press release received by "Economy News" that "Governor Omid Khoshnaw held a meeting at the governorate headquarters with the directors of Antiquities, Contracts, and Engineering, in addition to a delegation from the companies View Pioneer and Point Pass."
The statement added that "the meeting discussed the details of a local project focused on the digital and engineering documentation of Erbil's old neighborhoods and houses, as well as the restoration of ancient mosques, schools, and archaeological sites," noting that "this documentation approach has already been successfully implemented in the Sulaimaniyah and Halabja governorates."
For his part, Khoshnaw praised "the importance of local projects that preserve Erbil's historical identity," emphasizing "the necessity of scientific accuracy in carrying out these works given the city's historical significance."
The statement indicated that "the governor decided to form a specialized committee to conduct a scientific and in-depth study of the project, and to develop the appropriate legal and technical mechanisms to begin its implementation in a way that ensures the preservation of the city's authentic architectural style."
Erbil is moving towards "digitizing" its heritage and documenting its old neighborhoods and houses.
