President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid affirmed on Wednesday that Iraq has regained its normal status in the international community and its relations with its neighbors. He noted that Iraq adopts a policy of balance, openness, and the encouragement of dialogue to resolve conflicts.
In his address to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the President expressed Iraq and its people's gratitude for the United Nations' role in supporting and defending the democratic system, noting that "the international organization has been a great supporter of Iraqis in their democratic entitlements, foremost among which are the elections, which Iraq is preparing to hold soon to ensure the peaceful transfer of power." He emphasized working with the judiciary to ensure that the elections are free, fair, and transparent.
The President emphasized that "Iraq, with the support of friends, has been able to defeat the most dangerous terrorist threat the world has witnessed," calling for "confronting terrorism as a single phenomenon, without distinction between its aspects, and for the necessity of holding accountable those who finance and support terrorism with money and weapons."
He emphasized the continuation of efforts to return the displaced, dismantle camps, and return families to their areas, noting Iraq's commitment to achieving justice and protecting societal diversity. The President highlighted Iraq's efforts to achieve sustainable economic and social development and reduce its dependence on oil, while providing significant investment opportunities in the areas of water, electricity, and infrastructure. He noted that Iraq is one of the countries most affected by climate change.
He called on the international community to support him in this regard, noting that declining water resources pose a major challenge. Meanwhile, Iraq sought to reach an understanding with Iran and Turkey regarding the sharing of the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
