U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent said the Iranian economy is facing high inflation and other challenges, attributing this in part to U.S. sanctions. He also emphasized Washington's concerns about the Iranian authorities' violent crackdown on anti-government protests.
"The Iranian economy is on the brink of collapse," Bisent told the Economic Club of Minnesota, reiterating President Donald Trump's warning to Tehran to avoid harming protesters.
"This is a critical moment," Bisent added. "He doesn't want them to harm any more protesters. This is a tense moment," referring to Trump's threat on Sunday to strike Tehran if it began killing protesters, according to Reuters.
