The US Treasury Secretary reiterates Trump's threat to impose high tariffs on Canada.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent confirmed on Sunday (January 25, 2026) that the United States would impose 100% tariffs on Canadian imports if Canada proceeded with a new trade deal with China, reiterating a threat made by President Donald Trump on Saturday.

"We cannot allow Canada to become a conduit for China to flood the U.S. market with its cheap goods," Bisent told ABC News.

During a visit to Beijing on January 16, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an improvement in bilateral relations with China, citing a "new strategic partnership" and an initial trade agreement between the two countries.

Under the agreement, China is expected to reduce tariffs on Canadian canola imports to about 15% by March 1, down from 84%.
