The Ministry of Electricity announced on Friday, July 31, 2026, a two-pronged plan with five components to add 7,000 megawatts and raise production to 35,000 megawatts by 2030.
Ministry of Electricity spokesperson Ahmed Turki told the official news agency that "the ministry's plan, within the framework of the government program, aims to add approximately 7,000 megawatts to the national grid, bringing production to 35,000 megawatts by 2030." He noted that "the plan is part of the government program and aims to increase production capacity through five components, including expanding the construction of new power plants, completing stalled projects, and converting several plants to combined cycle systems to increase their production efficiency."
He added that “the plan also includes, in a fourth point, expanding solar energy projects, as well as developing transmission and distribution networks to accommodate new production capacities and reduce losses,” explaining that “the ministry’s plan is based on two parallel tracks: the first is maximizing the benefit from local gas through associated gas investment projects and reducing its flaring, while the second track focuses on diversifying fuel and gas sources by importing gas from more than one source, which ensures the stability of station operations and enhances energy security in Iraq.”
