Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi directed the purchase of 47,000 megawatts of electricity on Saturday, affirming that 2027 will be the year of doubling electricity production and distribution.
His office stated in a press release that al-Zaidi visited the Ministry of Electricity headquarters as part of his ongoing monitoring of the performance of state service institutions. He began by chairing an expanded meeting with senior ministry officials and staff, emphasizing the need to redouble efforts, combat corruption, and conduct an urgent study on supplying power to all available types of stations to ensure a significant improvement in electricity supply during the upcoming summer.
According to the statement, al-Zaidi affirmed that 2027 will be the year of doubling electricity production and doubling distribution and transmission capacity, representing a significant step towards transforming the electricity sector in Iraq. He assured Iraqis that the government is committed to ending the stagnation in the electricity sector and halting the waste and corruption that has persisted for decades. Al-Zidi, the Minister of Electricity, directed: "- Carrying out complete maintenance on the currently produced thirty thousand megawatts.
- Purchasing imported energy of no less than 10 megawatts from neighboring countries.
- Purchasing 37 thousand megawatts distributed as follows: 15 thousand megawatts from GE, 12 thousand megawatts from solar energy, and 10 thousand megawatts from thermal energy."
