The Baghdad Municipality announced on Monday the launch of the largest tree-planting campaign in the capital on Wednesday, the first of next month. It will include the planting of 300,000 trees, as part of the government's efforts to increase green spaces and improve the environment.
Baghdad Municipality spokesperson Uday al-Jandil said, "The municipality is preparing to launch the largest tree-planting campaign in the capital, starting October 1." He explained that "the campaign will include the planting of more than 300,000 perennial trees propagated in the municipality's nurseries and those affiliated with municipal departments."
He added, "The campaign will cover all areas of Baghdad across municipal departments, where Phytophthora, Acacia, Ziziphus, and Eucalyptus trees will be planted. These perennial species can withstand the capital's hot climate and provide shade and oxygen."
He confirmed that "the Baghdad Municipality has prepared new sites for tree-planting, including gardens, parks, and central locations, in addition to completing infrastructure, walkways, fences, and modern irrigation systems to ensure the sustainability of the trees."
He pointed out that "this year's campaign will feature advanced irrigation systems to monitor and maintain the trees," noting that it will see widespread participation from volunteers, citizens, civil society organizations, and university and school students. This will contribute to the afforestation process covering the largest possible area of the capital, transforming it into a greener and more vibrant environment.
Al-Jandil explained that "the importance of afforestation is not limited to the aesthetic aspect of the city, but extends to improving the environment, reducing air pollution, lowering temperatures, raising public health standards, and providing a natural outlet for the people of Baghdad."
He emphasized that "this campaign is part of the Secretariat's efforts to make the capital a more sustainable city, enhancing its civilized image and keeping pace with the government's efforts to combat climate change and increase green spaces."
Next Wednesday, a campaign to plant 300,000 trees will be launched in Baghdad.
