Takaichi is poised to become Japan's first female prime minister.
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Saturday chose conservative nationalist Sanae Takaichi as its new leader, paving the way for her to become the country's first female prime minister.
The party elected Takaichi, 64, to restore public confidence angered by rising prices and boost support for opposition parties that have promised generous stimulus packages and restrictions on foreigners.
A parliamentary vote to elect a new prime minister to replace Shigeru Ishiba is expected on October 15.
